Wishing for Spring…
Spring 2012 ads have just started appearing and while we might be biased, we think this season is really all about the hair.

Just let us play..!
If you didn’t already know, stylists are very creative individuals. They love when someone sits in their chair and asks for a look that is out of the ordinary; a look that challenges the stylist and allows them to play. This does not happen as often as our stylists wish it would…and because of that our stylists will seek their own ways to play with hair outside of the salon.
December Fenez finds her outlet doing photo shoots with other local artists. Some are just for fun, like these black and white shots. Here she’s experimenting with the embellished updo trend. If you look carefully at the above shot she is literally hand sewing those beaded stars onto her model adding the final sparkle to a sleek updo.
December has also done the lookbook for Jalu, a local fashion line designed by Jacille Herbert and Luanne Ronquillo (part of our Hedkandi family). Obviously the looks below are incredibly different than the previous ones; December had to craft looks that completed Luanne and Jacille’s vision for their line. That’s the joy of doing photo shoots…the chance to play, the chance to create looks that may not be worn everyday,
I suppose you could call us a beauty Parlour…
The latest issue of Parlour Life magazine is out and it features three photo shoots with hair styling by Hedkandi stylists. Pick up an issue…or check it out online! We’re super proud of Mike and Lindsay. Mike’s work can be seen in La Dolce Vita (photos by Deserae Evenson, styling by Carl Abad). Lindsay styled hair for the feature Ring around the Rosie…(photos and styling by Deserae Evenson) and for Ready, Steady, Go Mod! (photos by Wilkosz and Way, styling by Leah Van Loon, makeup by Satoko Suzuki).
Spread the cheer about….!

The christmas season is a crazy one. Hedkandi is super busy with last minute clients trying to squeeze fresh colours and cuts into already swamped schedules. Add in a city overflowing with holiday parties that beg for fabulous hair and we have a recipe for stressed out stylists. Its easy to be exhausted and overwhelmed preparing for Christmas…and its important to remember the joy the season is supposed to be about.
Last week we volunteered at The Children’s Cottage, donating a Christmas tree and decorating it and the house for the children that are staying there. The Children’s Cottage Society offers a wide range of programs for parents and children in Calgary, Alberta strengthening families by demonstrating leadership through a network of Crisis, Respite, and Support Services. We’ll be going again this week. It feels so good to bring a little cheer to children who may be feeling a little blue.
Happy Holidays…the final chapter!
As creative people we crave inspiration.
All of our stylists have studied at (or are about to study at) the Vidal Sassoon Academy. There is simple nowhere better to learn precision cutting techniques. Vidal Sassoon is one of the most innovative stylists in the world. He created the hair industry as we know it today. As the final part of our staff Christmas party Jereme and Michelle arranged for us to have a private screening of Vidal Sassoon the Movie: How One Man Changed the World With a Pair of Scissors.

We loved it.
Vidal Sassoon was a master cutter, of course, but he also changed the world’s vision of the salon experience. He was an innovator in all ways and we were enthralled by his story. It shows that with passion, creativity, and a willingness to push the limits, and a true commitment to your dreams and vision, you can accomplish anything.
And lets face it, the cuts he did in the 60′s are some of the most stunning and timeless cuts ever. Our stylists are still doing versions of them.

Happy Holidays….part 2!
So in the beginning we ate delicious food and toasted with champagne…awards were given and 5-year bracelets were received…and we all got very excited! Laughter and shenanigans ensued!

And in the end we were glamourously chauffeured in fantastic party busses to * STARS & MUSCLES * at Local 522 where we danced the night away!
Happy Holidays Hedkandi Style!
If you weren’t already aware, we LOVE a good party! Last Saturday was our Christmas party and Michelle transformed our Hotel Arts Location into a beautiful holiday space complete with a real tree and beautifully simple decorations.
Food was provided by Calgary food trucks Alley Burger

and Perogy Boyz (with a tiny bit of help from Kim!).
And that was only the beginning…

Wishing for red…
There are fewer and fewer natural gingers in this world and more and more of us trying to fake it! There are so many shades of red to experiment with – from soft ginger, through coppery orange, to deep merlot. Our stylists have already begun transforming their own locks from blond to strawberry, chocolate to warm copper, and caramel brown to dark wine and I’m about to go boldly from platinum to bright, coppery orange-red. Here’s some inspiration! What shade tempts you?
Blonde Ambition
Its definitely fall…the breeze is cool, the mornings are crisp, and the leaves are starting to change colour. Maybe you want to change colour too? Why not play with the idea of a golden blonde? Who says you have to go dark for the winter?
